She sucked in a deep breath, eyes wide and almost afraid.

I sometimes forgot how little she knew of the Celoran way.

We were encapsulated in a floating land, with verdant trees and sea blue grass sprouting from a ground that had no depth; no soil. Clouds—or the well-crafted imitation of ones, were perfectly white on the ground in strategically placed puffs, appearing as if they were pieces of furniture rather than actual clouds of water. This place was nothing more than a playground, filled with the scent of flowers and spun sugar.

I looked down at the swirling planet of blue and green; a favorite travel destination of those from my realm. It was no more beautiful than many worlds in Terrin, and perhaps far less enchanting than lands found in other realms. However, Terrin, in all its rugged and prosperous beauty, was never better represented than in the volatile, ever-changing landscape of planet earth.

“What is this place exactly?” Celeste breathed.

The smile that had managed to tug at my lips abruptly fell into a frown at the confused look on Celeste’s face.

Did everything shock or confuse this woman?

“It’s just one of many headquarters we have off of our favorite planets. Think of it as how a cruise ship stops at different ports. This is one of them. It’s a manipulatable world of entertainment where we may relish in our own space away from the inhabitants of the land. So there below is earth.”

“Wow, it’s so beautiful. I haven’t been back for a while,” she said with a soft sigh and a small smile.

“I wanted you to see this place because we are fighting more than a battle against adversaries. We are fighting for you to have the chance to return to this. With your partners.”

I shut down the ache my words conjured within me, despite so clearly recognizing in my words the reality that I might not be among them.

She looked at me, long curls bouncing around her shoulders, and she nodded.

“I love Terrin. Though Dryu is home. But this was the first place that I could really disappear into. Do you know what that feels like?”

I chuckled. “Yes, I understand very well. And so, when you want to disappear, this can be your haven. But the decisions you make tomorrow could change that.”

“What do you mean? Do you know something I don’t?”

“No. I already told you my stance. I believe you know the risks. But I wanted to remind you of the things you’ve lost, and the things you’ve gained. Whatever happens needs to be made with informed decisions. No hiding. No running from this, Celeste.”

She nodded, and I took her hand. “Come. I’ve watched you enough to know where you’re secretly dying to go.”

We teleported into an alley in the middle of a busy downtown with glowing neon signs and throngs of people rushing up and down the sidewalks.

Celeste looked around and her eyes popped open, more wide and blue than I’d seen in a long time. Still holding my hand, she began to walk.
